What to Do When Water Is Coming Through Your Ceiling in Western NC

Step 1: Contain the Water

Put a bucket under the drip. If the ceiling is bulging, gently puncture the low point with a screwdriver into the bucket — a controlled release is safer than an uncontrolled ceiling collapse.

Step 2: Cut Power if It's Near Fixtures

Water tracking near recessed lights, ceiling fans, or wall outlets is a shock risk. Cut power to the affected circuit at the breaker.

Step 3: Move Anything Valuable

Furniture, rugs, electronics — clear the drip zone. Cover what you can't move with plastic sheeting.

Step 4: Document Everything

Photograph the ceiling, the leak location, and any water in the attic if you can access it safely. This helps both diagnosis and any insurance claim.
