    Why 5-Inch Gutters Overflow in Western North Carolina and How to Size Them Properly

    Every autumn we get the same call. The gutters were cleaned last month. There is nothing in them. And in a hard afternoon rain, water still comes over the front edge in a sheet.

    The homeowner assumes it is a clog. Usually it is not.

    In most of these cases the gutter is doing exactly what it was built to do. It was simply never built for the amount of rain that falls here.

    This is the part of the job almost nobody explains, so here is the whole thing: the numbers, where they come from, and how to check your own house.

    The number nobody mentions

    Search for gutter sizes and you will find the same figure repeated on dozens of sites. A 5-inch gutter handles about 5,520 square feet of roof.

    That number has a condition attached to it, and the condition is almost always deleted.

    It assumes one inch of rain per hour.

    One inch an hour is a steady, soaking rain. It is not a Western North Carolina thunderstorm in September, and it is not what the mountains do when a tropical system stalls against the Blue Ridge escarpment.

    There is a second problem with that figure. In the plumbing code's gutter table, 5,520 square feet is the value for a 7-inch semicircular gutter. It has been copied across the internet and relabelled as 5-inch K-style, with the rainfall condition stripped out along the way.

    What actually falls here

    These are the design rainfall intensities for our towns, taken from NOAA Atlas 14, the dataset engineers use for drainage design. Both columns describe a 100-year storm. The difference is how long a burst you measure.

    For scale, the sheet metal industry's standard specifies 9.3 in/hr for Chicago. Highlands and Cashiers sit more than 20 percent above that.

    Why the five-minute number is the one that matters

    A flat commercial roof with drains has a little storage. Water can pond an inch deep while the drains catch up, so an hour-long average is a fair way to size it.

    An open gutter has no storage at all. It is a trough a few inches deep hanging in the air. Whatever the roof sheds in the next five minutes either goes down the downspout or over the edge.

    The plumbing code sizes on the 100-year, 60-minute rate. The sheet metal standard, SMACNA, using capacity work done by NIST, sizes on the 100-year, 5-minute rate. Both are legitimate. The five-minute basis is the conservative one, and for a hanging gutter it is the one that reflects what actually happens.

    This is not a fringe opinion. A 2021 technical paper published by IIBEC, the building envelope institute, found that the code's hourly figures have gone essentially unchanged since 1995 while short-duration rainfall intensities have risen. The 100-year, 5-minute intensity has climbed roughly 1 inch per hour on average since the 1930s. The paper's conclusion was blunt: the plumbing codes "truly represent a minimum standard."

    The code itself leaves the door open. It permits sizing from "other rainfall rates determined from approved local weather data." NOAA Atlas 14 is exactly that.

    The twelve miles that change everything

    Franklin averages 54.15 inches of rain a year. Highlands averages 84.50 inches.

    Those towns are twelve road miles apart. The difference is two thousand feet of elevation and the orographic lift that comes with it: air forced up the escarpment, cooled, and wrung out. NOAA's State Climate Summary for North Carolina puts it plainly. Southwestern North Carolina is "one of the wettest locations in the Southeast, receiving more than 90 inches of precipitation annually in a few locations."

    A gutter system that is comfortably adequate in Franklin can be undersized on the plateau. Same house, same roof, same crew, different mountain. It is one of the reasons roofing in Highlands at 4,118 feet is a different job from the same work in our Franklin service area.

    What this means for your roof

    Here is the same code table converted for local rainfall. These are semicircular gutters at the code's minimum slope, and the figure is how much horizontally projected roof area one gutter can serve.

    A note on profile. The code's table covers semicircular gutters only. K-style, the profile on most homes here, is not in it, which is precisely why the K-style numbers you find online are unsourced. A 6-inch K-style does carry meaningfully more than a 5-inch. If a contractor quotes you a specific square-footage rating for a K-style gutter, ask which standard it comes from. There is not a good answer.

    Steep roofs collect more

    A steeper roof presents a larger effective catchment to wind-driven rain, so the sizing method applies a multiplier.

    Mountain houses are steep. A 12/12 gable, common on the plateau, adds thirty percent to the load before a drop has fallen.

    Hanging the gutter steeper helps less than you would think

    Capacity rises with the square root of slope. Double the fall and you gain about 41 percent, not 100. Worth doing. Not a substitute for the right size.

    Worth knowing too: the code table's flattest column is 1/16 inch per foot. Common installation practice is closer to a quarter inch of fall per ten feet, which is less than half that. So the numbers above are, if anything, generous.

    The downspout is usually the real bottleneck

    We find this more often than undersized gutters. A properly sized trough emptying into a 2x3 downspout at one corner will still back up, because the trough was never the constraint.

    A 3x4 downspout carries roughly 2.4 times what a 2x3 carries. On most homes here it is the single cheapest capacity upgrade available, and it is the first thing we look at during gutter installation and replacement in Western NC.

    Two further points from the sheet metal standard. Fifty feet is a practical maximum length of gutter served by one downspout, and cross sections under 7 square inches should be reserved for small areas. A 2x3 downspout is 6 square inches.

    Valleys deserve their own attention. Where two roof planes meet, the water from both arrives at one short section of gutter. That section is not carrying its own length. It is carrying half a roof. It is the most common overflow point we see, and it is almost never a clog. It shows up constantly in the drainage problems we see in Franklin.

    Then the leaves arrive

    Sizing is half the story. The other half is that our gutters spend part of the year partly full.

    We get two debris seasons, not one.

    Eastern white pine sheds an entire year of needles at once in the autumn. Iowa State Extension and Clemson both describe this as normal, and it runs earlier than hardwood leaf fall. Pine needles are the harder problem. They pass straight through coarse guards, then mat into something like felt in the bottom of the trough.

    Then the hardwoods come down the mountain in waves. NC State's foliage forecast puts peak color above 4,000 feet in early to mid October, with the lower elevations following over the following few weeks.

    November is the month it all lands at once

    Highlands' wettest month of the year is November, at 8.17 inches on the 1991 to 2020 normals. December is essentially tied.

    So the wettest month is also the month the gutters are fullest of leaves, on the roofs with the steepest pitches, in the towns with the highest rainfall intensity in the region. That is the compound risk, and it is why a system that coped all summer suddenly fails in late autumn. It is also worth reading what heavy rain does to a roof before you decide the gutters are the only issue.

    How to tell if yours are undersized

    You do not need a contractor to run through this list.

    • Water sheets over the front edge in heavy rain and the gutter is clean. The clearest single sign.
    • It only overflows at a valley or an inside corner. Concentrated flow, undersized section.
    • You have 2x3 downspouts on a house over about 2,000 square feet. Very common, rarely adequate here.
    • One downspout serves a run longer than about forty feet.
    • Splash staining on siding, or a trench in the mulch below the drip line. Water has been going over the edge for a while.
    • Fascia is soft, or there is peeling paint behind the gutter. Overflow running back against the board.
    • Basement or crawlspace dampness on the same wall every time. Follow it up. It usually ends at a gutter.
    • Your house is above 3,000 feet with 5-inch gutters. Worth a proper look regardless of symptoms.

    A quick way to check the size. Measure the width of the flat back of the gutter, or the coil it was formed from. Five-inch K-style is formed from roughly 11.75-inch coil, six-inch from about 15-inch.

    Guards do not change any of this, which is the honest answer to whether gutter guards are worth it here.

    What to ask before you accept a quote

    Any competent gutter contractor can answer these. The answers tell you a great deal.

    1. What roof area is each downspout carrying? They should be able to give you a number per elevation, not for the whole house.
    2. What rainfall intensity did you size for? If the answer is a shrug, or "the standard size," they have not sized anything.
    3. What size are the downspouts, and how many? More downspouts beats a bigger trough almost every time.
    4. What are you doing at the valleys?
    5. Where does the water go once it lands? A correctly sized system that discharges against the foundation has moved the problem, not solved it.
    6. What hanger spacing, and screwed or nailed? Wet leaves and ice are heavy. Twenty-four inches is reasonable here. Thirty-six is not.

    The short version

    Gutter capacity is not one number. It depends on how much roof drains into it, how steep that roof is, how many downspouts carry it away, and how hard it rains where the house actually stands.

    In Western North Carolina the last of those is the one that gets ignored, and it is the one that varies most. Twelve miles and two thousand feet separate a 54-inch-a-year town from an 84-inch-a-year town.

    If your gutters are clean and still going over the edge, the system is telling you something specific. It is worth measuring before autumn does the testing for you.

    Are 6-inch gutters worth the money in Western North Carolina?

    On most homes here, yes, and the price difference between 5-inch and 6-inch is small relative to the job. The stronger case is above 3,000 feet, on roofs steeper than 8/12, and anywhere a valley concentrates flow. Below about 2,500 feet on a simple, modestly pitched roof with adequate downspouts, 5-inch can be perfectly correct.

    My gutters are clean and they still overflow. Why?

    Almost always capacity, either the trough, the downspout, or a valley delivering more water to one section than it can carry. Clean gutters that overflow are a sizing symptom, not a maintenance one.

    Will gutter guards fix overflow?

    No, and they can make it worse. A guard manages debris. It does nothing for capacity, and some designs reduce the opening water can enter through. If the system is undersized, a guard puts a lid on the problem.

    How many downspouts do I need?

    Divide the roof area draining to each run by the capacity figure for the downspout size you are using. As a working rule here, one downspout per thirty to forty feet of run, and never more than fifty feet on one.

    Does roof pitch really change the gutter size?

    Yes. A 12/12 roof is treated as collecting thirty percent more than a flat one. Steep roofs also throw water further out, so gutter positioning matters as much as size.

    How often should gutters be cleaned with pine on the property?

    Twice at minimum, once after the needle drop in early autumn and once after the hardwoods finish. On an oak-heavy lot a third pass in winter is worth it, because oaks hold their leaves.
